Founder of high street jewellery shop, Hugh Rice, has died aged 74, the company has said.
Hugh will forever be proudly remembered as the man who founded the jewellery store, Hugh Rice the Jewellers. He began his career as an apprentice at Carmichael's department store on George Street learning the tricks of the trade. Then, with the help of a £200 bank loan, he set up the very first Hugh Rice the Jewellers store in a small basement on George Street.
The company began as a clock and watch repair service, when, three years later, Hugh's brother Mike joined the business as an apprentice jeweller. With the family business in full swing, Hugh Rice became a name well known on the high streets of Hull, Harrogate and Beverley.
