When the sun is shining, few things are nicer than lazing around outdoors with a refreshing drink.

Tipi Summer recently launched its pop-up bar in Princes Dock Street next to Princes Quay in Hull and is modeling itself as a relaxing, family-friendly venue. To reduce queuing time, the bar has opted for pre-mixed cocktails including its "glacial" range dispensed from slushie-style machines.

Although the famous tipis are a familiar sight in Beverley, it's the first time the business has come to Hull and there was a lot of excitement when the canvas first popped up. I decided to take a friend one quiet weekday afternoon and see what all the fuss was about.

As you approach, the tipis certainly look good. Princes Dock Street is something of a sun trap and the open-walled tipis provide areas of shade and sunshine, with the best of the sun right next to the water where you can admire giant fish while you sip a drink.

To my surprise, there were only two tables and they had charcoal fires burning in braziers at the centre of each table. This must be pleasant in the chilly winter months but it was quite a warm day in July.

We opted instead to sit at one of the many benches next to the water to enjoy the sun. We'd hoped to get some mocktails, but the bar's non-alcoholic drinks comprises soft drinks and a tinned non-alcoholic beer.

As a compromise, we tried a Glacial Strawberry Daiquiri and a Staropramen Zero, a tin of Czech beer without the alcohol. The Glacial Strawberry Daiquiri arrived in a little disposable cup with a straw.

It proved to be fairly hard to drink because it was so thick, maybe a spoon would have been helpful. It didn't taste of alcohol at all but would undeniably be refreshing on a hot day.

The Staropramen Zero was served in a plastic cup and was surprisingly nice - it's not an alcohol-free beer I've heard of before but it tasted like the real thing and had a pleasant savoury and malty flavour.

My preference is still a Guinness 0.0% because it's so smooth and creamy but I wouldn't turn my nose up at another Staropramen Zero in the future. I'd say the key attraction to this venue is not its drinks menu but the sunny waterside location - with the live music at the weekend I can see it being very special.

When considering its merits as a family-friendly venue, I can see a mix of benefits and disadvantages. Watching the fish is sure to be a hit with young kids and last weekend, Tipi Summer arranged face-painting.

However, the apparent lack of baby-changing facilities (there are portaloos near the bar area) might put off families with younger tots.
