A business that describes itself as "Hull's largest independent supermarket" has interested me for a long time so I finally gave it a try this week.

Haris and Co in Terry Street is almost next door to the Beverley Road Asda and I've often wondered what it sells while watching people go in and out. I visited on a quiet lunchtime while feeling pretty hungry and ended up choosing lots of random items.

I didn't know what I was looking for so I started aimlessly mooching around the shelves and going from aisle to aisle. There was a stunning display of fresh fruit in the middle of the shop with pink lady apples and fruit and vegetables I've never seen in a supermarket before, such as durians and yams.

I was very excited when I saw there was a refill section in Haris and Co. I didn't know there was anywhere in Hull you could buy essentials such as pasta, rice and muesli with reusable containers which is attractive for eco-conscious residents trying to reduce their single-use plastics.

Sadly, I didn't have my containers with me but I still bought 120g of Bombay mix (one of my favourite savoury snacks) for just 47p. The weighing and sticker system was simple to operate so I also bought 160g of dried apricots for £1.60.

I also found a whole aisles dedicated just to spices which could be bulk bought in much larger bags than at the supermarket. When I find a good curry recipe I'll come back.

I love almonds so I decided to buy some South Korean almond Pepero - "chocolate-covered pretzel stick". Apparently 'Pepero Day' on November 11 is celebrated like Valentine's Day in South Korea and is the perfect excuse to buy chocolate-covered pretzels.

The next thing I noticed was a gigantic spinach and feta pie made with filo pastry. It weighed a whopping 800g and would probably comfortably serve six people but it only cost £2.50.

I also saw a selection of French biscuits by the Oui Love It brand which are made in France. They had chocolate-covered petit beurre which tempted me but I bought some ladyfingers instead which I thought would make a nice trifle but unfortunately, I accidentally ate them all.

The final thing to go into my basket was what I'd describe as a posh Pot Noodle. It contained dried shitake mushrooms and sounded tasty so I decided to make it my lunch for the day. It was actually really nice - it had a lot of pleasant flavours and reminded me of mirin rice wine broth.

I'll definitely go back to Haris and Co and take advantage of the fresh Baklava in the bakery section (filo pastry, butter, honey, pistachio nuts - heaven) and to buy another gigantic spinach and feta pie because it was delicious and fed two people for two meals.
