The Avenues is certainly no stranger to a coffee shop or two.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, one of the oldest just happens to be among the most popular. Opening in 2000, Planet Coffee has established itself as one of the founding fathers of the coffee shop takeover of the area. In the following years, it has continued to top lists of the best places to grab a brew in all of Hull.
In dire need of a caffeine fix, I headed to Newland Avenue to check it out.

The corner unit of Alexandra Road, the cafe has a modern exterior, with impressive street art decorating the second storey. Inside there was soft background music playing as people filled out the stylish ground floor area.
As expected with a name such as Planet Coffee, there are plenty of caffeine (and decaf) options. However, in the belting 24-degree weather, a vanilla iced latte to sit on the suntrap in the front of the property was always going to be the preferred option. A raspberry Bakewell slice on the counter was calling me too, and I couldn't resist. All together, the bill came to £6.75 - £3.65 for the coffee, 45p for the vanilla syrup and £2.65 for the sweet treat.
I took my seat outside while my brew was prepared, and before a blink of an eye, it was in front of me. The coffee hit the spot immediately, with the vanilla not being overbearing which can be sometimes the case - instead bringing a gentle, but noticeable taste. Perfect.
Though usually I leave the sweet treats, the raspberry Bakewell just appealed to me. The slice was packed with flavour - a mix of the almonds on top and the fruity jam complementing each other beautifully. I can definitely see why this place is rated so highly year on year, and I even went back in for a drink to go.
There are plenty of coffee shops in The Avenues area, and the bustling strip can sometimes be overwhelming for choice, but Planet Coffee will definitely be high up on places to go for my next Sunday brunch.
Planet Coffee, at 162 Newland Avenue, Hull, is open Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm, and Sunday, 9am-4pm.
