An American actor who starred in one of the most panned movies of all time is returning to Hull for a meet-and-greet as 'fans' of the "greatest bad movie ever made" watch one of cinema's most well-known abominations.
The Room instantly gained notoriety when it was released in 2003 to dreadful reviews. The romantic drama, dubbed "the Citizen Kane of bad movies", was written, produced, and directed by the enigmatic Tommy Wiseau. The film was panned by critics upon release but has since taken on a dedicated following who adore its awfulness.
Cult Cinema Sunday - the independent film night that has been showing beloved films in Hull since 2011 - has announced a one-off screening of The Room, with filmgoers encouraged to "slow clap the sex scenes", throw plastic spoons and call out some of the questionable dialogue while the movie is running.

Greg Sestero, who played Mark in the film, will be along for the ride, and will take part in a Q&A session afterwards. He previously visited the city in May 2023 when The Room was shown at Social, in Humber Street. In his latest message to film fans in Hull, Greg said: "On May 8th, I'm coming back to your awesome city for a 20th anniversary live screening of your favourite movie The Room. I'll be there live in person, surprises, Q&A, meet-and-greet. Get your tickets, I'll see you there Hull!"
Greg's time on set prompted him to write The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, The Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made in 2013. The memoir was adapted into the 2017 film The Disaster Artist, starring James and Dave Franco, Seth Rogan and Sharon Stone.
The heartfelt adaptation won James Franco the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, while the film was nominated for Best Musical or Comedy. Screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber were also nominated for the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Since The Disaster Artist, Greg has written and produced Best F(r)riends Volume 1 & 2, and recently made his directorial debut with 2022's Miracle Valley.
The 18-rated film will be screened on Wednesday, May 8 at 7.30pm at the Vue Cinema, in Princes Quay, Hull. The show will feature a screening of the film, followed by a live Q&A session with Greg, with meet-and-greet and photo opportunities. The Room merchandise will also be available to buy. Tickets are on sale now.
