Hull Fair showmen have revealed how much it costs it run a school at the MKM Stadium for their children.

The annual fair runs during term time, but families travelling from all over the country can find it difficult to place youngsters in a permanent school. Every year, dozens of children are taught in temporary classes during the nine or more days that they are in Hull.

This "pop-up" school has been delivered by the Tigers Trust, with maths, English, arts and crafts, along with sports sessions and team building, all on the curriculum. However, the classes do come at a cost.

This year, showmen and women had to pay out £8,000 to fund the school. Among them is Jonathan Hart, who held charity events during the week to help cover the costs.

Such was the success of the events, including bingo, a raffle and an auction, that they raised £11,250. The generous fair operators decided to donate the surplus £3,250 to a good cause and kept it local.

Jonathan said: “The charity event was put on to pay for the showman’s children’s school while we were here on site. The school cost somewhere in the region of £8,000 and we managed to raise £11,250. So we have donated the remaining £3,250 to the children’s ward at Hull Royal Infirmary.”
