Super League legend Ryan Hall gave insight into how he ended up at Hull Kingston Rovers, after winning the Colin Hutton Outstanding Achievement Award at the club's awards night.
Winger Hall, now 36, has shown his ability, physicality, professionalism and dedication while clocking up many impressive performances as a Rovers player, helping the club rise from bottom of Super League to finishing second this season. In this campaign, he became Super League's all-time leading try scorer.
After collecting his award, Hall discussed his career journey and explained: "I signed for the Toronto team when they were still a thing and I thought I'd get back to it and try to get myself fit again. A couple of months go on, they go under.
"I'm on to my agent and said I can still offer someone something. And he came back with two teams - Hull KR being one of them and our friendly neighbours across the city were the other!
"There were two different things on the table. Hull KR, I'll be honest, it was less than what the other team offered. But the other team offered something with potential and you have to do this and you have to do that. So I was undecided a little bit.
"Then I got a message, it was around November (2020) - it was a later time that I signed. It was from someone I'd not really spoken to before but I'd played against him. And he said - I can't do his voice or accent! - 'hey brother, Tony (Smith, head coach at the time) says you're signing.' I hadn't signed at the time but he said 'Tony says you're signing, it'll be great to link up with you and play with you'.
'It was Skids (Shaun Kenny-Dowall). So that pretty much made my decision up about where I was signing and what I did. So Skids was a bit of an influential part in me signing. Then it was, pretty much, get over to here and get to work.
"The year that I'd signed Hull KR (who finished bottom in 2020) was a bit of a different team to what I'd been used to playing in, championship winning teams. But I'm so glad I've gone on this journey that I've been recognised for."
