Churned up grass in West Park is set to be repaired and reinstated following the departure of Hull Fair ride operators.

Mud and tire tracks were left in the wake of the caravans and other vehicles which left West Park following the end of Hull Fair on Saturday, October 14. A Hull City Council spokesperson said their works would make sure the park, off Anlaby Road, is once again a place that residents can enjoy.

The works. which are fully-funded by the council, begin as soon as all vehicles and items linked to the yearly fair are removed from the park. The council aims to do the works as soon as possible but when they start and are finished is weather-dependent.

It comes as part of the clean up of the Hull Fair site which is launched once every year once the event ends. A team of 15 council workers head onto the Walton Street site and begin collecting rubbish from 5.30am.

The clean up takes around nine hours to complete and it sees them collect most of the 68 tonnes of rubbish left at Hull Fair every year on average. This year's event also saw 10 arrests and 23 dispersal orders issued, according to Humberside Police.

Those arrested were already wanted for previous offences. The force said only a small number of minor incidents happened with the number of dispersal orders, which were mainly issued to stop late-night antisocial behaviour, down from last year's 40.

Attendance this year is estimated to have been around 600,000 up from the approximately 400,000 that went in 2022. The council's spokesperson said: "As soon as Hull Fair finishes, work is undertaken by the council to ensure West Park returns to one of the city's major green spaces for residents to enjoy.

"This work includes reinstating and repairing the grassed areas affected by the fair."
