When Oasis played at Bridlington Spa - just days before splitting up

Oasis are coming back after splitting up 15 years ago, just days after they had performed what proved to be their last indoor gig - right here in East Yorkshire.

Fans of the Manchester rock band were left ecstatic this week when it was announced Liam and Noel Gallagher would be reuniting for a tour in 2025. The brothers have gone on to have solo careers since the group suddenly disbanded in 2009, just over a week after performing at Bridlington Spa.

The gig on August 20 that year proved to be the last time, until next year, the Gallaghers performed together at an indoor venue during the final days of their Dig Out Your Soul world tour. The only other performance after Bridlington was two days later during a V Festival slot at Weston Park, in Staffordshire.

They had been due to perform a few more concerts that month in Europe but their show in Paris on August 28 was cancelled minutes before it was due to begin after a fight between the Gallaghers backstage.

The gig in Bridlington therefore proved to be much more significant than anyone had realised. Hundreds of fans queued up overnight in the rain to grab a ticket when they went on sale on July 15, 2009. Only 3,500 were available overall, including from official ticketing websites, so competition to snag one was fierce.

Unsurprisingly, they sold out within an hour. One fan told the Hull Daily Mail: "Seaside towns like Bridlington don’t get bands like this, so I was very excited and rushed down to make sure I got a ticket. The gig will be amazing."

A few weeks later, the big day arrived and Liam Gallagher walked onto the stage saying: "Tonight, I’m a rock ’n’ roll star and I’m at Bridlington Spa”.

Launching into a Champagne Supernova of the band’s biggest hits, starting with Rock ’n’ Roll Star, closely followed by Lyla, The Shock Of The Lightning, Cigarettes And Alcohol and Roll With It, the Britpop icons delivered a masterplan in excess as they awed the heaving crowd.

"Yorkshire, Yorkshire, Yorkshire,” bayed the audience as the Mancunian frontman looked on impassively, giving nothing away. “Say that again. In English,” he then retorted, before the band spun off into another hit. This was the smallest date on the band’s world tour and they seemed to relish the hot, oppressive closeness of the crowd.

The Hull Daily Mail report of the gig said: "The night in Bridlington is how gigs are supposed to be, not separated from the crowd by miles of barriers and burly bouncers. And, knowing just what a rare, amazing gig the Spa’s surroundings would offer, hundreds of Oasis fans had turned up for the event hours before the doors opened.

"They wanted to get the best spot in the house for one of the biggest gigs in its history. Spilling onto the town’s roads in the evening sunshine, the waiting crowd ensured the band’s hits filled the air well before Liam and brother Noel had probably even got to the resort."

While the upcoming tour is isolated to much larger venues, perhaps Oasis will get a taste for being back on the road together and will one day shake the foundations of Bridlington Spa once again - and maybe in Hull too where they haven't played together since July 2002.
