There are up to 700 new jobs up for grabs at a new prison opening in the East Riding of Yorkshire next year.

Mitie is recruiting at HMP Millsike in Full Sutton ahead of its opening in 2025. It said new recruits will be paid competitive salaries, bringing well-paid employment to the area.

HMP Millsike will be the UK’s newest and its first "green" prison. The Category C prison is predicted to consume 75% less energy than traditional prisons thanks to running solely on electricity and technologies like solar panels and heat pumps. Many nearby residents had objected to the prison.

Situated on land next to the existing HMP Full Sutton, HMP Millsike has been named after Millsike Beck, a river that runs adjacent to the new jail. The Ministry of Justice is aiming to create 10,000 more prison spaces by the end of 2025.

When opened, the category C prison will hold around 1,500 prisoners who will spend their sentences learning skills they need to find work on release as part of the government’s drive to cut reoffending.

In addition, Mitie Care & Custody will deliver drug treatment that supports abstinence-based recovery for prisoners in the facility and after their release, a learning package tailored to prisoners to help them boost their skills, and 1,000 living wage jobs for prison leavers throughout the contract.

There are currently more than 350 open vacancies and Mitie said there will be more to follow. Live vacancies include operational support grades, prison custody managers, and prison custody officers.

Custody Officers will play a central role at HMP Millsike with responsibility for the day-to-day care and well-being of prisoners. Previous experience working in a prison is not required as successful applicants will receive training.

HMP Millsike said good communication, a positive attitude, being a people person and leadership and people management experience are all key skills that will help new recruits thrive.
