Hull Kingston Rovers produced another huge statement of intent as Mikey Lewis' two tries helped them see off a Leigh team that had been in red-hot form with an impressive 24-0 win.
Leigh had won nine out of 10 before this but they were nilled by a solid-looking Rovers side who scored two tries in each half - and again showed their potential Grand Final credentials. After losing at Wigan - following an eight-match winning run - they answered questions over how they would respond in excellent fashion.
Rovers' high kicking game brought two first-half tries for them, as Ryan Hall struck and Lewis showed some more individual class, to give them a 10-0 half-time lead while Leigh's Matt Moylan was tested and struggled. Tyrone May's kick chasing was a key factor in that. The main blow was Niall Evalds failing an HIA, after a hit from Tom Amone.
KR then struck a crucial blow early in the second half as Jesse Sue forced his way over, taking advantage of unconvincing defence, then the game was killed off as Lewis finished off a move in which Rovers kept the ball alive well. Elliot Minchella was sin-binned in the second half for a high shot.
Rovers had Evalds back into the side at full-back, after he missed the Wigan game with a calf problem, with Jack Broadbent dropping out. Kelepi Tanginoa had a hamstring strain and was kept out here to be safe, while Jai Whitbread was suspended. That meant Tom Opacic and Jack Brown were both brought on to the bench.
Hull KR used their kicking game early on to try to cause problems for Leigh, with May and Lewis both delivering testers. At the other end, Evalds was also being tested too on his return but dealing with what was being thrown at him, in a fast-paced and tight start.
With it being an intense start, Leigh were looking like gas was being taken out of their tank then Rovers struck first. Lewis' high kick was batted back by Tyrone May batted back and Ryan Hall was there to pounce - but Lewis could not add the two as he put a kickable kick just wide.
There was a blow soon after that when Evalds went off for an HIA - but Rovers stretched their lead when May caused problems for Matt Moylan again by leaping and patting the ball back, allowing Lewis to weave past three men close to line and plant the ball down - and Lewis added the extras this time to give a 10-0 lead.
Rovers made a solid enough start to the second half and were rewarded as Jesse Sue powered over, beating three men before going over to the left of the posts - and a straightforward kick from Lewis added the two to make it 16-0. And more Hull KR class effectively killed the game off as Lewis finished after Matty Storton teed it up, with Rovers having kept the ball alive well close to the line, then a simple kick for Lewis made it 22-0.
Opacic had thought he had slid over for a try but it was disallowed after a Minchella high shot on Moylan, which led to the Rovers captain being sin-binned. Lewis, though, added another two points after a penalty for obstruction. It completed the scoring in a dominant win.
