The Royal couple and their three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, moved to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate in September 2022.
Their previous home, still listed as the family's official residence, has always been somewhat enigmatic. The main bedroom they used was located on the ground floor of Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace, which was previously inhabited by Princess Margaret and boasts 20 rooms, four floors, its own lift, gym, and nine staff rooms.
Late Royal author Christopher Warwick clarified the use of the term 'apartment' on True Royalty's Royal Beat, stating: "All of these royal residences at Kensington Palace are called apartments, which of course makes people immediately think they are flats like the American term for an apartment.
"They are not. If you think of Kensington Palace in a way, it is built around three courtyards. If you kind of think of them as being these wonderful red brick terrace houses. Because they are all joined, but separate houses."
The couple have traded in their grand Royal residences for the more modest Adelaide Cottage in Windsor. Although they still have access to Anmer Hall in Norfolk, Adelaide Cottage is now their permanent home.
Located within the Crown Estate's 655-acre private Royal park, Adelaide Cottage boasts a rich history dating back to 1831 when it was built as a retreat for Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV. This charming cottage has been a favourite among many famous residents, including Queen Victoria, who often enjoyed breakfast there.
Following a major renovation in 2015, Adelaide Cottage now features opulent decorations, including a master bedroom with a ceiling adorned with gilded dolphins and rope decorations.
Post their 2018 nuptials, Prince Harry and Meghan were rumoured to be considering the cottage as their new Windsor abode. The couple reportedly appreciated the privacy it offered and its proximity to London.
