Hull's lost Outdoor Market remembered in 18 brilliant pictures

Views from the 70s and 80s of the open-air market in Trinity Square, which was held for more than 700 years

In the days before pound shops and internet discounts, the market in Trinity Square was they place to bag a bargain.

For more than 700 years, an outdoor market was held in Hull's Old Town.

Originally staged in Market Place, it later moved to Trinity Square, on the other side of Hull Minster. Many people will remember shopping there right up until the late 1990s.

Hull's first recorded weekly outdoor market was held in 1279. By 1293, two weekly markets on Tuesdays and Fridays were established. They remained traditional market days until the early 19th century when Saturdays were added to the weekly calendar.

But for the past 20-odd years, as shopping habits have changed, the Outdoor Market has only been revived occasionally, with the emphasis on crafts and farmers' fare. Fortunately, the ancient tradition of a regular outdoor market continues in Walton Street – where traders still seek to offer bargains too good to refuse.
