The combined skills set of three people – chef, baker and front-of-house - help to provide a unique dining experience that people want to keep coming back to.

That’s the view of Hearth, the “charming culinary paradise” in Hull city centre that has just earned its return to The Good Food Guide’s top 100 restaurants list for a second year. Ian Pexton, of Hearth, said: “We are thrilled to be in the top 100 again this year.

“It’s great so see so many places coming into the city as well. It all helps to put Hull on the culinary map.”

Ian said: “I think it’s a combination of things the three of us that own the business have, we each have our own skills set, that has got Hearth back into The Good Food Guide’s top 100 for a second year. We all come together to do what we want to do, and how we want to do it.

“We want to serve people the best food we possibly can in the kind of environment we would like to be served in. We want to give people the experience we would like to have ourselves.”

Ian said the past year had been difficult - “like it has for everyone else” – with the cost of living impacting the hospitality sector. “In terms of how busy we have been, there has been a big improvement and we hope to carry on in that regard.

“It’s getting better and better. It’s been hard for everyone, it’s a case of just getting through it.”

Hearth, in King Street, joined fellow Hull eatery The Hispanist, in in Paragon Arcade, in the top 100 listings. The city centre venues were singled out with a total of 13 winners, in the North East England region, by what is considered in the industry to be the restaurant review “bible”.

Publishers of The Good Food Guide 2024 said the nominations generally reflected Britain’s waning appetite for fine dining. A relaxed restaurant where diners can eat well but eat simply too is now the order of the day, according to feedback from its readers.
