Hull Kingston Rovers' full-back Phoenix Laulu-Togaga’e, who has been on loan this season at Oldham, has been nominated for both the Betfred League One Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.
League One heavyweights Oldham, coached by former Great Britain star Sean Long, were champions - their first League title in nine years, with Laulu-Togaga'e being a crucial part in the glory.
Rovers sent Laulu-Togaga'e, 21, to Oldham for regular first-grade action, having made nine appearances for Hull KR since joining the club in 2022 including eight in Super League, with his previous team being Keighley Cougars.
Hull KR head coach Willie Peters had said, at the time of the player leaving the club: "The key for Phoenix is to play games. He needs to keep developing and the only way to do that is to play more games. Unfortunately with the system at the moment with reserve grade you only play every second week and sometimes you don't, so you might only play once a month.
"So it's important he plays and ideally we'd like Phoenix to go out and play some rugby. At the minute, it doesn't matter what grade he's playing, he needs to be the best version of himself.
"Nobody is expecting Phoenix to be a Super League player now, he's in a Super League squad but that doesn't make you a Super League player. So Phoenix needs to go out and prove himself at Championship or League 1 level, Reserves, wherever it is, and work towards being a Super League player."
Oldham were expected to have a strong season when Laulu-Togaga’e joined and that is how it turned out, as they were the dominant club in the nominations. Long is in the running for Coach of the Year.
As usual, the nominations – and winners, who will be announced at Rugby League ’s Awards Nights at the Royal Armouries in Leeds on Tuesday October 8 – have been determined by a poll of head coaches, who are not allowed to vote from players in their own teams.
