Simon Grix has singled out Lewis Martin and Logan Moy as Hull FC’s young players of the season. The young duo have been regular components of the side this year, with Moy playing 17 games and Martin 24.
Standing out with their performances, both players have had energy, desire, urgency, and spark to their performances, with the willingness to learn and develop. That has pleased Grix, with the duo, along with Harvey Barron, who has started the last eight games, continuing to run strong in the backfield, link up together, and compete for everything.
"We'll go Lewis Martin and Logan Moy, and for similar reasons," Grix told Hull Live when prompted for his young player of the year. "From where they were in the first game to where they are now, they've improved a lot. They're really coachable, and they're trying to take on board what we're asking them to do.
"Even in these games where we're not going great and stuff is going wrong, when we still review it and look at their jobs in isolation, they really are trying. They're getting it right more often than wrong, which is great to say considering it's their first year in Super League. It's trying times and it's difficult, but they've been a pleasure."
Grix also singled out Harvey Barron after Saturday’s match against Salford Red Devils, alongside Barron and Moy. He explained: "There's a few more in there as well. I'm pleased with a lot of those young lads, Logan, Lewis, and Harvey; they get better every week. There's a lot of good in their game at the minute.
"We try to find positives, and sometimes there aren't any, but on the face of it, those three lads are getting a lot better, and that's what I'm taking out of it. It's been a tough old year for them, but they're absolutely buzzing to be going out and representing Hull FC every week. In the future, it will be under more favourable circumstances, but it is learning none the less."
Grix also gave a positive update on young duo Nick Staveley and Roman Dawson, who are making good progress with their ACL recoveries. Both players are in the picture again and are hoping to be back for pre-season training.
Grix added: "Just mentally, when you’ve been out with those sort of injuries, you're limited to what you can do, and when you get the chance to get back on grass, you're not necessarily in with the group, but you're there. They've got a bit of craic again with what's going on around them. It's a milestone for them and their headspace, really, to get back out.
"There's still a lot of work to get themselves where they need to be, but that's definitely a big one. The message to them is that how hard they work now will accelerate how quickly they are back in amongst things once we get going again. But it's a good progression for them."
Fellow young talent Jack Charles, meanwhile, lined up for Hull’s academy side at full-back in the play-off semi-final at St Helens on Monday night. The Black and Whites were beaten 38-6, with Cobie Wainhouse scoring the away side’s one and only try.
