Simon Grix believes there's a 'reality' Hull FC have 'to face' regardless if they finish bottom of Super League or not. The interim coach has said the season is largely one to forget, with the only silver lining being the emergence of some bright, young players.
With just two rounds to go, the Black and Whites are currently level on points with London Broncos at the foot of the table, with the two sides locked on three wins apiece. As it stands, Hull hold the superior points difference on -492, with London sitting on -541. That gives Hull a 49-point advantage going into this weekend, with the Airlie Birds hosting Salford Red Red Devils and the Broncos heading to France to take on Catalans Dragons.
But for Grix, finishing 11th is little consolation, albeit it would save the embarrassment of a first wooden spoon in sixty years. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Grix said: "In my opinion, there’s a reality we have to face here whether we like it or not.
"Whether second bottom, bottom, the last one gets the wooden spooners, but regardless, it's not been a season of anything that's worth remembering or repeating, if I'm honest, other than those young lads who have shown a little of what might be in store for the future. This is one to forget and learn from massively, but yeah, second bottom or bottom, it's a failure regardless."
Finishing the season with two home games, Hull host Salford before Catalans come to town, with Grix looking to pick up his side after last week's hammering at Leeds Rhinos. The biggest defeat of the season, Hull lost 68-6, with no review coming after what was one of Hull's lowest points of the year.
"We haven't done a proper review," Grix said: "Other than the opening few sets where we defended pretty well, there's not much positive to take out of that game to move forward. Sometimes, the experience is enough. It was a low point; we've had a few this year, and that one felt really low. Unfortunately, it was a hard one for everyone to swallow. We're not in the best spot; it's fair to say, both mentally and physically, as a group, the bodies we have out and all those bits, it’s all rolled into a tough position."
Grix added: "I try to avoid excuses, but there is so much context within what has happened this season; from where we started round one, the team looks totally different. There's been a lot that has gone on between that time that has been challenging.
"It's been a tough old year, but with two games left, I can only assure you that we'll do our very best to make sure that we train at the right level and try to get our performance back up to where they need to be."
