The fairground industry is full of characters but few can be quite as inspirational as Gilbert Chadwick.
The life of a showman is tough work, both physically and the dedication needed, yet Gilbert is still going strong at 90. He heads a dynasty within the industry with his sons and grandson all operating rides at Hull Fair this year.
He and wife of 66 years Eileen, herself 86, have no plans to retire and the indefatigable nonagenarian remains as passionate about his work as ever. He runs one of the funhouses which he actually built himself.

“People often ask me what my secret is,” Gilbert said, “and I tell them my granddad is from Peru and they live a long time. I will be 91 at Christmas.
“I was born in the fairground and I have done this all my life. I built this funhouse while my son built the ghost train nearby. We also have other rides including the reverse bungee.”
What keeps Gilbert going is the camaraderie among the showmen and women community. Everyone looks out for each other, he says.
“If I had a fire in the funhouse it would be put out by all the other operators long before the fire crews arrived,” he explained. “If the generator went then they would all rally round to get it working again. People will help you at any moment.”
Gilbert shows no signs of slowing down. He still drives the lorry around the country and assembles and takes down the ride each time.
“I still drive the lorry and we are off to Ilkeston Fair next,” he said. “There may come a time when I need to employ a driver but not just yet.
“What I love about this life is that you drive from place to place. It is physically hard work but it is much easier with the hydraulic systems we have today with just one trailer.”

Gilbert admits Hull Fair remains his favourite destination. It is something he keeps a close eye on when looking at his diary.
“Hull Fair is my favourite and it is something I look forward to all year,” he says. “To be honest, I love the money but I also love the atmosphere. I will certainly be here next year.”
