Hull Fair was packing up today, but many of the rides will be staying in East Yorkshire.

Many of the rides and stalls will be nipping up the East Yorkshire coast to Bridlington for the Autumn Charter Funfair. Like Hull Fair, the Charter Fair is a historic event - stretching back around 700 years - and claims to be the oldest of all.

The event will return to its usual site at Moorfield Road Car Park in the town and run from Wednesday October 18, to Sunday October 22. Many of the fair rides and stalls will be coming directly from Hull Fair.

The official opening will take place at 5pm on Wednesday, with the Mayor and other dignitaries and members of the Showmen’s Guild in attendance. As in Hull, there will be the historic tradition of the ringing of the Fair Bells.

There are plenty of other events for those not heading to Bridlington. Around this time of year there are also the likes of Ilkeston Fair in Nottinghamshire, while there is a big fair in Yarm and in Milton Keynes.

After the fair season ends it is quickly into Christmas, with many operators setting up in the German markets and the winter wonderlands in London, Newcastle, Stoke and Sheffield. Some fair operators are truly global and those not wishing to suffer our winter period head to the likes of Hong Kong, Singapore, Mauritius, St Lucia and Gibraltar.

The showmen and show-women tend to have a break early in the new year, when they may make repairs and spruce up rides, or simply a well-earned break, ready for the next season.
