A huge festival that offers scarily good fun for all the family is again heading for Hull in time for the Halloween celebrations.

Hull Horror Fest was founded by comic con fan John Jackson and he has been full-on with the preparations for the 2024 event. There will be guest appearances from stars of film and TV, including Craig David Dowsett, of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023), Alien Abduction (2022) and The House That Zombies Built.

The sixth-such event to be held in Hull will also see more stalls than ever before, some replica movie photo opportunities and a chance to dress up as horror characters or in Halloween outfits. John said: “In 2020, during lockdown, a British horror movie about a séance held over Zoom was made, called Host.

“It won lots of awards and I have got all the members of the cast coming to the Hull event. For some of them it’s the first time they will have ever been together, because it was all shot on Zoom. They will be doing a Q&A for us.”

John said: “We have got more different photo opportunities this year, including a creepy clown corner and a Halloween display with body bags and cobwebs. There’s a movie one from Creepshow and a Nightmare Before Christmas one with a life-size Jack Skellington.

“There is also an 8ft Krampus. I built that one myself at home and my son, who is two, was terrified.

“There are more stalls this year and I make sure there is a variety. This year we’ve got live artists and everything from knitted Freddy Kruegers to 6ft ornaments.”

Hull Horror Fest takes place at the Costello Stadium, in Anlaby Park Road North, on Saturday, October 26, from 10am to 4pm. Advance tickets are on sale now for £7 (it will be £10 on the door), and £5 for under-16s and free for under-fives.

Hull author and historian Mike Covell is also due to appear. “He will be doing a talk on the spooky sides of Hull,” John said.

The Horror Fests attract anything up to 2,000 people, many of them seeing a chance to dress up for the occasion. “The efforts people go to are absolutely unreal. You often get full families dressing up, there’s fake blood galore.

“What residents who live near Costello Stadium think when they see all these people rolling up in their costumes I don’t know. It makes for quite an unusual sight.

“What I love about the event is seeing everyone having fun and getting everyone together as a Halloween, horror-loving community. It’s that collective experience.”
