While the past couple of weeks have been pleasantly warm in what has felt like a final blast of summer, temperatures are set to drop towards the end of the week for many. And with the energy price cap changing on October 1, with bills set to jump by 10%, the thought of turning the heating on will be one of dread.
But while bills may be rising soon, a heating engineer has said there are ways to reduce wastage and maximise efficiency. It focuses on what has been called a "common mistake" that people make.
Mistakes that are increasing your heating bills
Drying clothes on radiators
Gordon Wallis, an engineer from heating company Your NRG, said: "Drying clothes on radiators might feel like a convenient solution, but it can actually cost you more in the long run. Did you know this common mistake could increase your energy bills by up to £55 a year? When radiators are blocked by damp clothes, they can't heat the room effectively, leading to wasted energy and higher costs."
Drawbacks of drying clothes on radiators
The expert said: "Drying clothes on radiators may seem convenient, but it can lead to unintended consequences for your home's environment. Excess condensation from this method can promote mould growth, potentially causing damage to paintwork and triggering allergens. Additionally, it can hinder the efficiency of your heating system, leading to increased energy costs."
Alternatives for drying clothes indoors efficiently
The expert added: "There are several effective alternatives to drying clothes on radiators that can help maintain a comfortable and healthy indoor environment. Utilising natural light by placing clothes near windows, periodically turning clothes over for even drying, and using hangers to reduce creases are all practical strategies. Adding lavender oil to fabric conditioner can also help combat unwanted smells, ensuring your clothes stay fresh without the need for additional drying time."
Washing fewer clothes per load
"It's important to consider the impact of overcrowded airers and washing machines on drying efficiency. Washing fewer clothes per load allows for better airflow and quicker drying times, reducing the risk of damp and musty smells. By adopting these simple yet effective tips, homeowners can optimise their indoor drying process while minimising energy consumption and maintaining a comfortable living space."
Radiator maintenance
"Keeping your radiators in top condition is key to keeping your energy bills under control. Simple tasks like bleeding radiators to release trapped air and ensuring they're not blocked by furniture can make a significant difference.”
Additional energy-saving tips
"There are plenty of other simple tricks you can use to cut down on energy usage and save money. For instance, did you know that using the eco settings on your washing machine and dishwasher could save you around £63 and £28 a year respectively? And don't forget about maximising the spin cycle on your tumble dryer - it could save you up to an extra £53 annually! Little changes like these can add up to big savings over time."
