A keen runner from East Yorkshire is going to new extremes to support a charity close to his heart.

Eliott Spencer is attempting to run from the Humber Bridge to London Bridge later this month, a distance of over 200 miles. The “Bridge to Bridge” challenge will take Eliott six days to complete, in aid of Kidney Cancer UK.

“This will literally be a run into the unknown,” said Eliott, owner of “coffee with a conscience” company, Howden Coffee, which is based in Howden, near Goole. “Although being a keen runner, I have never attempted anything this extreme. I am determined to complete this for all that are suffering with this horrendous disease.”

Eliott will set out on Monday, September 23, hoping to reach his destination in the capital by Saturday, September 28. He has set up a JustGiving page with a target amount of £10,000.

Explaining his reasons for undertaking the run on the page, Eliott said: “I am the owner of Howden Coffee, and being ethical and sustainable are strong threads that run through the business. We donate 5 per cent of all coffee sales to charity, which includes Kidney Cancer UK.

“The reason that this charity is one of our charitable partners as well as being my charity of choice for this challenge is a very personal one. My grandmother died a number of years ago of kidney cancer, and more recently a very good friend of mine was diagnosed with kidney cancer.

“Fortunately, it was caught early, he had a kidney removed in April this year, and aside from regular check-ups he didn't require any further treatment. He is now back to full fitness, running marathons and living life to the fullest.

“He will hopefully be joining me on some sections of my running challenge. I want to use this challenge to raise awareness and funds to ensure we can stop people losing their lives to kidney cancer in the future.”

Kidney Cancer UK said it will be sharing daily updates on Eliott’s progress in aid of the cause, as he tackles the journey via Lincoln, Grantham, Peterborough, Cambridge and Hatfield, before reaching London. A spokesperson for the charity said: “This will be a very physical and mental challenge, and we’d love for as many people as possible to support Eliott on his run.”
