Drivers flouting double yellow lines is a main reason for parking tickets in Hull.
A Hull Live Freedom of Information (FOI) request has revealed the most common reasons in the last year for motorists to get issued parking penalties by Hull City Council. In 2023/23, more than two thousand tickets were issued for non-authorised parking in permit zones, and over a thousand for parking in disabled bays without a disabled badge.
But double yellow line parking dwarfed these. There were almost 7,000 instances in Hull in the last financial year.
The only other category with similar levels of penalty charge notices issued was the non-payment of parking fees. This occurred more than 7,700 times in 2023/24, including 4,250 times in off-street parking.
This category will cover pay and display-related issues, such as no pay and display ticket visible. An initial top ten reasons for penalty charge notices last year and the current financial year provided, without accompanying numbers, showed 'Expired pay and display ticket' and 'No pay & display ticket' among the top reasons.

Earlier this year, councillors discussed the need for a crackdown on inconsiderate parking in Hull neighbourhoods. Labour's Cllr Sharon Belcher said that parking complaints in Marfleet Ward area were mounting, including when Hull KR played at home. She proposed a motion to fill traffic officer vacancies and redouble enforcement efforts. This was backed at a full council meeting in spring, with cross-party support.
Double yellow lines flouting continues to be a main reason for parking tickets in the current financial year. As of July 24, there had been 2,030 tickets issued for parking on double yellow lines, all but one in on-street areas.
