Child safety and heavy traffic concerns have been raised ahead of an upcoming nine-month road closure in Beverley as work continues on the £86.9m Jock's Lodge scheme.
A concerned resident contacted Hull Live about the potential side effects caused by the planned closure of a half-mile section of the A164 Lincoln Way/Minster Way for westbound traffic, which forms part of the project. The council says it understands the possible issues and "will keep our traffic management under constant review" during the closure.
It is set to be put in place for traffic heading towards Victoria Roundabout (Morrisons roundabout) from Ward Way Roundabout between Monday, October 14 and Saturday, July 12 next year. Diversion routes will be in place including taking traffic that's on Lincoln Way northbound to Woodmansey Mile.
The resident feels the closure will put a strain on routes such as Victoria Road and Woodmansey Mile and believes there could be long delays just to travel as far as Morrisons from Lincoln Way along the diversion route during peak times along with a risk of accidents and "road rage".
The presence of Keldmarsh Primary School nearby added to the concerns as the area around the school is likely to become extremely busy around pick-up times, potentially posing a risk to children trying to cross the road.
The resident said: "The potential outcomes are not for the faint hearted."
In response to the concerns, an East Riding Council spokesperson told Hull Live: "Our contractor is liaising with Keldmarsh Primary School regarding the potential impact and will continue to do so when the closures are imposed and works progress.
The spokesperson added: "We understand concerns about congestion issues and we will keep our traffic management under constant review to see if there is anything further we can put in place to avoid problems at peak times."
The planned road works are a part of the wider £86.9m Jock's Lodge improvements which have been taking place since January of this year and are expected to be completed in 2026.
