A campaign has been launched in Bridlington aiming to inspire locals to take a stand against fly-tipping and build up more pride in the town.
The Love Where You Live initiative is being spearheaded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, with the hope that residents will contribute towards transforming litter-ridden streets and back alleys into cleaner, more pleasant spaces.
The campaign is kicking off on Wednesday 11 and Thursday, September 12, with council enforcement officers and public protection teams visiting around 450 properties plagued by fly-tipping. These officers will engage with residents and distribute informative leaflets.
Locals are urged to report any instances of fly-tipping they witness so they can be swiftly investigated and cleaned-up.
The council teams also aim to educate communities about proper waste disposal methods such as correctly using green, blue and brown wheelie bins, and taking additional rubbish to the nearest household waste recycling site at Carnaby.
As part of this project:.
- Mobile CCTV cameras will be installed at five locations around the town to monitor potential fly-tipping activity
- Signs will be erected in some of the most affected areas, notifying the public that CCTV is in operation
- Posters will be displayed directing people to where they can report fly-tipping and where waste should be disposed of.
The campaign, set to run for several months, will closely monitor fly-tipping in the area.
The council was awarded £34,000 from DEFRA (the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) to back the project.
Councillor Lyn Healing, the council's cabinet member for communities and public protection, said: "With this Love Where You Live campaign we want to encourage people to take pride in the streets where they live and help us make them cleaner places.
"Fly-tipping is a crime and it's important that people report any they see to the council, so we can take action against those responsible, and hopefully prevent it from happening.
"Bridlington is a great place to live, but unfortunately, there are some areas that are spoiled by a minority who think it's fine to dump rubbish and not get rid of it properly.
"By promoting the easy and legal ways there are to dispose of rubbish, we can help people to look after their neighbourhoods."
This project follows on from a similar Love Where You Live campaign which took place in Goole last year.
Those found guilty of fly-tipping could be hit with a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 by the council or the case could be escalated to court, where they face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment.
