A “Visit My Mosque” open day in Hull is expected to attract large numbers of people, following the recent riots in the city.
The national event has been observed by Hull’s Pearson Park Mosque, or Jame Masjid, for the past six years. More than 150 people attended the open day last year, with the “Visit My Mosque” initiative, organised by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), designed to build bridges across diverse communities.
A spokesperson for the Hull open day said: “This year, with the recent riots in Hull, we expect a big turnout. We want to engage with the whole of the community because of the negativity towards what’s been happening in Hull.
“We held an event in Ella Street on the August Bank Holiday, with the local residents, and many councillors attending as well, and they are making this into another Ella Street group event.” The open day will be held on Saturday, September 28, from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
An “Ella Street visits the Mosque” invitation has been extended to people in the area. It says: “To further enhance our community spirit and friendship after the extraordinarily successful ‘Salaam on Ella Street’ tea party, our friends at Pearson Park Mosque (Jame Masjid) would like to invite us to their open day. There will also be snacks and cake.
“We’re all welcome to visit individually but it will be nice to make this another Ella Street event and visit together as a group.” Anyone who would like to attend with the group is asked to meet outside Grain, on the corner of Ella Street and Newland Avenue, at 11.30am on the 28th.
Any resident unable to walk to the Mosque is asked to text 07835 155961 or email ellastreetfest@gmail.com to have transport arranged. Any women attending on the day are asked to please wear a head covering/scarf and to cover their shoulders.
The MCB encourages Mosques across the UK to hold open days and share their stories with their neighbours with all faiths and none. Visit My Mosque as a national initiative started off in February 2015 as a humble attempt by the MCB at bringing together 20 Mosques to hold their open days on the same day of the year; it has since grown to more than 200 Mosques.
